About Kathryn Freitas
JEWELRY ARTIST
As a child who's favorite toys were a rock tumbler and the Bedazzler, my deep love for nature, sparkle, and the miniature showed up early on. Today, I am a contemporary jewelry-artist who creates custom pieces utilizing natural stones and precious metals of silver and gold. I love the imaginative and analytical challenge of each piece, starting with design and then figuring out how to make it. Many of my pieces start with a raw stone which is saw-cut, shaped, and polished by hand. I confess a particular attraction to the chalcedony family of stones like agates, jaspers, and carnelians -- and often times, the quirkier (veins, druzy, banding) the greater the appeal. Next in the sequence is metal work, including soldering, stone setting, sanding, and polishing. Each piece is made with care and consideration for the material, functionality, and finish.
When not in the studio, I can be found spending time with family and friends, hiking, golfing, cold plunging, and practicing shinrin-yoku (forest bathing). It is among nature's brilliant patterns, shapes, colors, and miniature worlds that I find inspiration for Touchstone Jewelry's designs.
